. Palos Verdes, CA
- Plein Air Studies -

A lifetime of close observation of water and light informs my interest in the water’s edge and the coastal environment, first raised in Bermuda and living on the East Coast, now living with my own family in Palos Verdes, California.

Two of the best disciplines for an artist’s development are figure drawing and painting en plein air. Both are terrific training for honing one’s perception. Plein air painting makes me more efficient in studio work. In turn, working large in the studio encourages more boldness when painting en plein air, taking risks with broader brushes and larger canvas.

On site I use 5x7 or 6x8 panels or 12x16 stretched canvas in one or two 40 minute visits. Most are left just as they are to preserve the freshness of the experience. Sometimes a larger study is finished in the studio. Sometimes I will begin a large piece (24x48, 30x30, 36x60) in the studio and then (if it’s not windy!) bring it on site to catch the spontaneity of the light.
